Specimen Required

For One Day Urine Collection:

  1. Use a plastic container with Cytolyt fixative provided by either the doctor’s office or the hospital laboratory.
  2. Collect a urine sample on the second time the patient urinates that day.  This can be done by urinating directly into the container, or into a paper cup and immediately transferring to the container.
  3. Write patient name, date of birth and the date the urine sample was obtained on the label on the container.
  4. Do not put the container(s) with the urine sample in the refrigerator.
  5. Please ensure top is on tight prior to transport to the lab.
  6. After collecting the sample, bring the containers to the hospital with your lab slip(s).
  7. Be sure to call ready registration (518-926-5300 or 1-800-761-8031) prior to bringing the containers to the hospital.
  8. If you have any questions about collecting or delivering the specimens, please call the Cytology laboratory at 518-926-3830 between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

For Three Day Urine Collection: 

  1. Use the 3 plastic containers with Cytolyt fixative provided  by either the doctor’s office or the hospital laboratory.
  2. For three(3) days in a row, collect a urine sample on the second time the patient urinates that day.  This can be done by urinating directly into the container, or into a paper cup and immediately transferring to the container.
  3. Each day use a new container.
    1. Write patient name, date of birth and the date the urine sample was obtained on the label of each container.
  4. Do not put the container(s) with the urine sample in the refrigerator.
  5. Please ensure top is on tight prior to transport to the lab.
  6. After you have collected all three samples, bring the containers to the hospital with your lab slip(s).
  7. Be sure to call ready registration (518-926-5300 or 1-800-761-8031) prior to bringing the containers to the hospital.

Specimen Minimum Volume

Always add as much specimen as possible for cytology specimens to ensure adequate cellularity to make a diagnosis.

Specimen Stability Information

Transport in 180 ml container, with approximately 40 mL of Cytolyt fixative, at room temperature.

Rejected Due To

  • Missing or discrepant information
  • Improper fixation
  • Insufficient quantity or leaked specimen

Special Instructions

  1. Catheterized urine may be dripped directly into the urine cytology container with fixative or in a sterile container and then divided into the cytology container (and into the appropriate microbiology container if Micro biology testing is also requested) .
  2. It is not necessary to measure equal parts of the urine and fixative.
  3. Each specimen container must be labeled with the patient full name and the date of collection.
  4. Each specimen must be accompanied by a completed cytopathology request form. In addition to the usual information required on the form, it is important to indicate “URINE”, “VOIDED” or “CATHETERIZED”, and when appropriate indicate”RIGHT” or “LEFT”.
  5. Requests “FOR EOSINOPHILS” should be indicated on the requisition/in the order.
  6. Clinical history should be provided with the specimen order (i.e. hematuria, stone, suspected tumor, recent catheterization, and information as to previous treatment, chemotherapy).
