Flow Cytometry-Tissue

Useful For

Identify and characterize the following:

• Reactive lymphocytosis vs chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)

• CLL vs mantle cell lymphoma

• Prolymphocytic leukemia vs lymphoblastic leukemia large granular lymphocyte proliferations, T-γ lymphoproliferative disease, natural killer cell proliferations, T-cell CLL, T-cell γ/δ proliferations

• Sézary syndrome

• Non-Hodgkin lymphoma

• Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma

Neoplastic B-cell proliferations (chronic leukemias and lymphomas) are clonal expansions of cells that express either κ or λ immunoglobulin light chains.

Method Name

Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry

Important Note

These studies require that the tissue to be handled promptly as it is sent to a reference laboratory for additional studies. Please notify the Histology Department prior to sending the specimen as this will help to prevent misplacement, delays, or other adverse events.

  • Between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday please contact the Histology Department at 518-926-3832.
    • Please note: The cut-off time for receiving flow cytometry specimens is 3:00 p.m. to ensure timely handling and shipping to the reference laboratory.
  • Weeknights after 5 p.m. and on weekends, call the main GFH laboratory at 518-926-3800 and ask for the on-call Pathologist.

Aliases

Specimen Type

Tissue

Specimen Required

Fresh lymph node tissue should be submitted in a dry, sterile container along with a completed request slip.

  • For lymph node core biopsies, a small amount of  normal saline may be added to keep the tissue from drying out.
  • Alternatively, tissue can be submitted in RPMI culture media
  • Transport specimen to the Histology Department as soon as possible after collection

Specimen Minimum Volume

  • 0.5 to 1.0 cm3 fresh tissue

Specimen Stability Information

  • Fresh tissues,  tissue in saline, or tissue in RPMI media should be transported immediately to the laboratory Histology Department.

Rejected Due To

  • Specimen frozen
  • Specimen in formalin or other fixative
  • Contaminated transport medium

Performing Laboratory

Tissue specimens for flow cytometry are sent to Integrated Oncology reference laboratory.

  • Exception: for patients with BlueShield of Northeastern New York health insurance only, flow cytometry specimens will be sent to Quest Diagnostics reference laboratory.

Day(s) and Time(s) Performed

Monday – Friday beginning at 7:30 a.m. – 3:00p.m.

The cut-off time for receiving flow cytometry specimens is 3:00 p.m. to ensure timely handling and shipping to the reference laboratory.
