Glens Falls Hospital Announces Significant Expansion to Surgical Services


A total of 11 surgeons will join together as the Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital, with future plans to relocate to 14 Hudson in Glens Falls

Glens Falls, NY - Glens Falls Hospital announces a major expansion in surgical services for the region, including significant growth of Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital, as well as an additional physician practice location and two new surgical suites within the existing hospital.

Gregory Tillou, MD was the first surgeon to join Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital in September 2017. Dr. Tillou has extensive experience in general surgery and robotic surgery, and is currently seeing patients in the lower level of the Pruyn Pavilion of Glens Falls Hospital. He will be joining together with five General Surgeons from the privately-owned, Glens Falls-based practice, Baywood Surgical Associates, who will also become employed providers of Glens Falls Hospital.

Steven Scalia, MD, Michael Lieberth, MD, Joseph D’Agostino, MD, Matthew Anderson, MD, and P. Gregory Scalia, MD have a long history in this community with over 60 years of combined expertise, having performed over 20,000 cases since 1995. They have an extensive commitment to our region, performing all types of general surgical procedures including thyroid surgery, gastrointestinal and skin cancer surgery, robotic surgery and breast surgery. Dr. Gregory Scalia is currently the Chief of Robotics Surgery at Glens Falls Hospital and was instrumental in starting the Robotics Program. All of the surgeons are Board Certified and Fellows of the American College of Surgeons.

In addition to General Surgery, Glens Falls Hospital plans to further expand Surgical Specialists by also integrating three existing Glens Falls Hospital physician practices, the Center for Lung and Chest Surgery, Adirondack Urology, and Orthopedic Specialists of Glens Falls to the Surgical Specialists team.These providers include Louis DeCunzo, MD, a Thoracic Surgeon; Vincent Cooper, MD, Harry Slatch, MD and Kari Sudfeld, FNP, Urologists; and Thomas Varney, MD and Jordan Haskins, RPA-C, Orthopedics.All 6 providers from the Center for Lung and Chest Surgery, Adirondack Urology, and Orthopedic Specialists of Glens Falls as well as Dr. Gregory Tillou, are already employed providers of Glens Falls Hospital.

Plans are already under way to create integrated and advanced physician practice space for the expanded Surgical Specialist group within 14 Hudson in Glens Falls. Glens Falls Hospital is leasing roughly 26,000 square feet of the newly constructed Bonacio building adjacent to the hospital’s Emergency Department.Split between the first and second floor, this new location for the hospital will include modern, state of the art, specialty physician practice space.Interior construction of the new office is expected to start this summer.

In early 2019, the six General Surgeons from Baywood Surgical Associates, Dr. Tillou of Surgical Specialists, and the providers of Adirondack Urology, the Center for Lung and Chest Surgery, and Orthopedic Specialists of Glens Falls will be joining together as Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital in their new office located at 14 Hudson Avenue.The General Surgeons of Baywood Surgical Associates will remain at their current location on Baywood Drive in Queensbury until the construction of the new office is complete.

Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital will conduct patient consultations at the 14 Hudson location, with surgeries and major procedures being performed at Glens Falls Hospital.Two new state of the art operating rooms at Glens Falls Hospital will further enhance the surgical experience for patients, families and physicians.

In 2017, the hospital received a large private donation for the construction of two new operating rooms (ORs). This project also included the construction of a new admission area, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and nurses’ station. These new ORs are equipped with interactive technology that permits voice commands from providers and nursing staff. This new technology also transfers images taken during the procedure directly and seamlessly to the hospital’s Electronic Medical Record system. The new system confidently meets the highest standards of patient safety and comfort, bringing the most advanced medical technology to the region.
