Help Us Make a Difference
630-plus members strong, the Glens Falls Hospital Guild has provided close to two million hours of service in the daily operation of Glens Falls Hospital since its formation in 1903.
In that time, this dynamic, diverse group has raised over $3.1 million - all gifted to the hospital.
An active and crucial element to the Glens Falls Hospital establishment since 1903, the Guild started in a most unusual way. It may have been the 20th century, but with no ambulance and no 9-1-1, local socialite Lillian Wendall found herself unceremoniously dumped into a wheelbarrow by her friends when an appendicitis attack required immediate transport to what was known then as the Parks Hospital. This unconventional jaunt led to the creation of an organization to deal with such problems - the Hospital Guild. The newly formed Guild raised $645, which would equal $16,185 today. With an average annual salary in 1903 of $641, this was a phenomenal amount of money.
The Glens Falls Hospital Guild now provides services in more than 60 departments including 14 of the hospital’s regional health care facilities. Equally as diverse and different as the jobs they do, our volunteers range in age from 13 to 90-plus years young.
Above and beyond the two million service hours to date, the Guild diligently raises funds to fulfill department’s wish lists and provides an annual scholarship for two outstanding Junior Volunteer pursuing higher education. The funds that drive this generous giving are achieved by regular bake sales featuring goodies donated from the kitchens of dedicated Guild members, and a variety of vendor sales featuring everything from books and clothing, to jewelry and gift items. Larger events which are now favorite community activities for hundreds of passionate participants include the Holiday Bazaar, the Parade of Baskets and the Tree of Lights celebration.
The Glens Falls Hospital Guild also owns and operates the Gift Atrium in the Northwest Tower Lobby. The Gift Atrium, which is open to the public, provides a unique shopping experience which showcases an enormous selection of items for every individual taste and for all seasons, celebrations and holidays.
So much a part of the day-to-day activities of the hospital, the Guild exemplifies the dedication and determination of its founders which lives on today in the 650-plus volunteers who generously donate their time and money toward support of Glens Falls Hospital.

Terrific Teens Helping Our Hospital
Teenagers ages 13 - 18 may volunteer a minimum of two hours per week as part of a six-month commitment to the Glens Falls Hospital Guild. This experience provides opportunities for personal development by building competence and confidence in customer service, decision-making, and organizational and leadership skills in a health care environment. Junior volunteer contributions are not only recognized by Glens Falls Hospital but shared with the students' individual schools each year.
The Glens Falls Hospital Guild presented two $2,000 Junior Scholarship awards on Thursday, June 20th during the Guild Board Meeting.
