Bringing Good Dental Health
to Area School Children
Glens Falls Hospital's Mobile Dental Van is temporarily off-the-road, following the retirement of Dr. Michael Valla, affectionately known by thousands of children across our region as "Dr. Mike" (see below). We plan to resume operations in the near future.
Our Mobile Dental Van was the first rural mobile dental program in New York State. In an average year, more than 1,100 uninsured and underinsured children from across a five-county region receive quality dental care through the Van's visits to area school districts and Head Start locations. Children without insurance and those covered by Medicaid and Child Health Plus access our services at no out-of-pocket cost.
We look forward to resuming our service to area children later this year.
Saluting "Dr. Mike"
Michael E. Valla, D.D.S., Medical Director and Dentist
Glens Falls Hospital's Pediatric Mobile Dental Program
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Mike Valla for his valuable contribution to the
quality of life for area children throughout his 20 years of community service.
During that time, Dr. Valla estimates, he has provided care to more than 20,000
Under Dr. Valla's direction, our Mobile Dental Program has built cooperative relationships with more than 30 school districts in a five-county area as well as collaborative paternerships with Head Start programs in Warren and Washington Counties.
Dr. Valla's deepest commitment was to reach out to those children who needed him most. From thawing frozen van pipes in below-freezing temperatures, to building trust with kids through an afternoon of fishing, he went above and beyond.
He has made a significant impact on the health of our community in a unique and most effective way, taking on numerous challenges to bring preventive services to rural school locations and often setting the stage for other programs to follow.
Dr. Mike is often relied on as an expert resource by others interested in establishing mobile dental programs. His work has led to enhanced oral health care in dentally underserved populations of children throughout New York State.
Today, many of the kids Dr. Mike saw in the early years of the program are now grown with children of their own. What a wonderful legacy of smiles he has left to our region.
