Since 2003, the Bay Road Center
in Queensbury has been home to Rehabilitation Centers'
main North Country outpatient facility.
The 23,000 square-foot, two-story Outpatient Rehabilitation Center
is nearly double its previous
location on the Hospital campus, space the
Center quickly put to good use, having seen its patient volumes increase
significantly over the past 6 years.
The facility’s centerpiece is its state-of-the-art aquatic
rehabilitation pool – the only one of its kind in the state. While other
aquatic rehab pools typically use a hydraulic chair lift to lower patients into
the pool, the HydroWorx 2000’s entire floor actually raises and lowers to
variable heights. Patients can stand holding handrails or even sit in a
wheelchair as the platform slowly descends into the water. The soft,
rubber-coated platform duals as a treadmill with variable speed control.
Underwater jets provide additional resistance depending on the patient’s rehab
needs. Physical therapists can also view monitors using underwater cameras for a
better view. Water temperatures are adjustable between 74 and 94 degrees, the
higher temperatures more conducive for rehab sessions for patients with
arthritis.
Other hospitals and rehabilitation facilities have pools, but Glens
Falls Hospital is be the only hospital in the state to
have the entire package that will allow comprehensive aquatic treatment for
individuals of all ages and diagnoses, according to Sharon Luckenbaugh, Rehabilitation Centers director.
Previously, the hospital scheduled pool time three times a week at the Glens
Falls YMCA, a pool maintained at cooler temperatures for competitive swimming
events. With the 14’ by 9’ pool, physical therapists book patients
into 10 hours of available pool time daily. Another advantage of the on-site
pool is that therapists can easily follow up with additional rehab time with
patients after an aquatic therapy session if they so desire. "Under our
current arrangement, patients sometimes need to return to the hospital for
additional therapy that same day," said Luckenbaugh. "That’s less
than ideal in the winter or in instances where patients have special
transportation arrangements."
In addition to a specially engineered aquatic therapy pool, the Center features private treatment rooms, a rehab gym, a hand rehabilitation center, and
a dedicated pediatric therapy program. The facility also houses the Hearing
Center, with a drive-up window in the works where clients can conveniently drop
off hearing aids in need of repair or pick up new batteries.
