New Technology Reduces  Excessive Menstrual Flow

Dr. Kate O'Keefe (right) and Sue Bailey, R.N., display the new uterine balloon therapy system at the Day Surgery Center.

The Day Surgery Center at Glens Falls Hospital has invested in new technology to help local gynecologists more effectively treat women with excessive menstrual flow.

The Center is now equipped with the ThermaChoice Uterine Balloon Therapy System, which has been shown to reduce bleeding to normal levels or less in more than 85% of qualified women.

Excessive menstrual bleeding is a relatively common occurrence in many healthy women, especially as they approach menopause. The new therapy system utilizes a balloon catheter inflated with hot, sterile fluid to remove the endometrial (or inner) lining of the uterus and reduce the flow. The system is designed for pre-menopausal women whose excessive bleeding is due to benign causes and who have completed childbearing.

Uterine Balloon Therapy typically requires just 30 minutes of operating room time. The procedure itself is completed in less than 10 minutes. Women interested in learning more about this therapy are encouraged to contact their gynecologist.
