Olivia Curran, a fourth-grader from Sanford Street School, recently presented a check for $118.54 to the C.R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital as part of a school fundraiser she organized. Last February, Olivia decided to organize a fundraiser where her classmates and the other fourth-grade class donated spare change to the Cancer Center. Between February and May, some 35 fourth-graders collected and tossed their spare change in a small fountain with a decorative turtle which Olivia dubbed "The Fountain of Hope." Every Friday, her teacher, Mrs. Cormie, emptied the fountain and the school secretaries Mrs. Reid and Mrs. Guay counted the change. In surpassing her goal of raising more than $100, Olivia's sense of efficacy most impressed her teacher. "This child is something else," said Mrs. Cormie, who also attended the check presentation ceremony. "She sees out beyond herself." |
