U.S. Olympic luge medalist to speak to local high
school athletes June 5
GLENS FALLS — Two-time Olympic luge medalist Mark Grimmette will
be the guest speaker at a special reception on Tuesday evening, June 5, as Glens
Falls Hospital’s Rehabilitation Center honors a select group of high school
student-athletes from across the Greater Glens Falls region. The reception will
begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Rehabilitation Center on Bay Road in Queensbury, just
south of Adirondack Community College.
The students were featured as “Student-Athletes of the Week” throughout the
current school year on the “Glens Falls Hospital Rehabilitation Center High
School Sports Academy” radio program, which airs daily on radio stations WCKM
(98.5 FM), HITS 95.9 FM and WWSC (1450 AM). The students were selected for this
honor by their coaches and athletic directors in recognition of their
accomplishments in the classroom and on the playing field.
Grimmette is one-half of the most successful U.S. Luge doubles team in history.
Along with his sliding partner, Brian Martin, he has won 65 international
medals, including a bronze in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan, and a silver
in the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City — at which he was also one of eight U.S.
athletes to be given the honor of carrying the World Trade Center flag during
the Opening Ceremonies. He will speak to the students about his Olympic
experiences and the importance of balancing athletics and academics.
This is the fourth year in which Glens Falls Hospital’s Rehabilitation Center
has sponsored the radio program and reception. Past guest speakers have included
1984 Olympic wrestling gold medalist Jeff Blatnick and Samantha Retrosi, who
represented the U.S. in luge at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.
Glens Falls Hospital’s Rehabilitation Center offers outpatient physical and
occupational therapy to people of all ages from across the region at its Bay
Road location; at The Medical Center at Wilton, just off Exit 16; and at seven
other locations.
