Dr. Patricia Hale named
Laureate of local ACP chapter
GLENS FALLS — Patricia Hale, MD, Ph.D., FACP, a specialist in internal
medicine, has been named Laureate of the New York Chapter of the American
College of Physicians (ACP). The Laureate Award, a local chapter’s highest
honor, was presented at the New York ACP Downstate Scientific Meeting, March 24,
2007, in New York City. Dr. Hale, a clinical assistant professor of medicine at
New York Medical College, and chief medical informatics officer for Glens Falls
Hospital, was honored for her outstanding contributions to medical education.
Laureate Awards honor local Fellows and Masters of ACP who have demonstrated a
long-term commitment to excellence in medical care, education, or research, and
in service to their community and the American College of Physicians.
ACP Fellows are physicians whose activities in internal medicine practice,
teaching, or research have been recognized by the society. They often use the
letters “FACP” (Fellow of the ACP) after their names and degrees. ACP Masters
are Fellows who have been elected by an awards committee for their superior
accomplishments in internal medicine. They often use “MACP” after their names.
Dr. Hale has worked and lectured extensively in the area of Medical Informatics
for over 10 years with a special interest in electronic prescribing and
medication management. She was chair of the national ACP informatics
subcommittee and continues to lead the informatics committee for the New York
Chapter of ACP. She is a member of the HIMSS Patient Safety Steering Committee
and chairs their Task Force on Electronic Prescribing. She is also co-chair of
the inpatient work group on Interoperability for the Certification Commission of
Health Information Technology (CCHIT) and a juror for their product
certification testing.
On the New York state level, Dr. Hale has participated in several state wide
groups on health information technology and electronic prescribing and is
currently vice chair of the New York e-Collaborative. She is co-author of a
textbook on Electronic Medical Records published by ACP/ASIM as well as
co-author of a comprehensive report on electronic prescribing published by the
E-Health Initiative and is editor of a book on electronic prescribing for
clinicians that has just been published by HIMSS.
Dr. Hale is the chief medical informatics officer for Glens Falls Hospital,
which has an extensive wireless information system, including recently
implemented computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and full loop medication
management. She is also chief technology officer for ARCHIE (Adirondack Regional
Community Health Information Exchange) in upstate New York, which is a recent
HEAL NY grant awardee implementing electronic health records and electronic
prescribing in community physician offices and clinics. She continues to see
patients and practices general internal medicine with a special interest in
osteoporosis and is medical director of the Northeast Regional Osteoporosis
Resource Center at Glens Falls Hospital (NERORC).
The American College of Physicians (ACP) is the largest medical-specialty
organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. ACP
members include 116,000 internal medicine physicians (internists), related
subspecialists, and medical students. Internists specialize in the prevention,
detection and treatment of illnesses in adults, reflected in the organization’s
trademarked phrase “Doctors of Internal Medicine. Doctors for Adults.®”
