Clinical Decision Unit
The new Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) is an innovative addition to the philosophy of
comprehensive emergency care in the community hospital setting. It is designed for
emergency care patients who require three to 24 hours of testing or further treatment.
This unit is the first of its kind in the Northeast.
When a patient enters the CDU, an emergency physician or the patients family
doctor will determine the necessary testing or treatment. Emergency care nurses will
monitor patients. If a condition requires inpatient care, the patient will be admitted to
the hospital under the care of a primary care or on-call physician.
CDU Patients benefit by receiving all of the necessary care without being subjected
unnecessarily to the expense and inconvenience of a lengthy hospital admission. Likewise,
long waits in the hectic emergency room atmosphere are avoided. In the same way, the
hospital benefits by utilizing its resources in the most efficient manner while maximizing
patient services.
