Growing up, children just want to fit in and be accepted by their peers. No child wants to be labeled as ‘different.’

The Regional Diabetes Center Campership Fund gives children with diabetes the opportunity to attend a camp for children with diabetes, discover more about their condition and learn they’re not all that different. Kids ages 6 to 16 submit essays that are judged by the Center’s certified diabetes educators. Selected essays earn children a trip to one of several local camps. Here, not only do campers have diabetes, so do many of the counselors. This contact with highly motivated mentors gives the children a push in the right direction. All camps are based on a positive approach to diabetes; campers are exposed to new methods of diabetes self-management, coping strategies and new technologies.

Recognizing the need for North Country children to have positive contact with other children with diabetes, retired Chestertown couple Joe and Janet McDowell created the scholarship fund through the Glens Falls Hospital Foundation. The fund provides local children with an opportunity to attend a summer camp for children with diabetes. The McDowells started the ball rolling. Now you can help make it possible through your contributions to bring a smile to a child’s face for summers to come.
