Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play

The Health Promotion Center of Glens Falls Hospital launched Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play in 2011.  The goal of this New York State Department of Health grant-funded program is to improve the health and wellness of Warren and Washington County residents. Among the programs many activities were:

  • Beautifying and revitalizing activities at Sagamore Park, an underutilized neighborhood park in the east end of Glens Falls. The project included the creation of a new community garden, new bike racks, playground upgrades and new signage (See more with the video above)
  • Partnering with local retailer Stewart’s Shops to apply “Eat Healthy Today” stickers on select food items in Warren and Washington County stores, helping people easily identify healthy food choices.
  • Teaming up with Johnsburg Central School and Eagle Scout Aaron Ferguson of Troop 36 to establish an outdoor fitness course at the school, with exercise instructions from the GFH Wellness Center posted at each station.
  • Launching a “Healthy Corner Store” initiative with Schoony’s Country Market in North Granville, increasing the availability of fresh produce in the store.
  • Working with municipal leaders in Fort Edward and Lake George to conduct “Complete Streets” assessments, with a goal of improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and promoting and encouraging physical activity through the use of walking and biking routes.
