"Woman to Women" Breast and Cervical Cancer Education

For: Women age 40 and older

Program Goal: The program's goal is to increase participant's knowledge of breast and cervical cancer screening and thus increase utilization of breast and cervical cancer screening measures by women.

Program Description: This education program includes information on:

mortality and morbidity of breast cancer; benefits of early detection; review and identification of risk factors; American Cancer Society Guidelines for breast self-examinations; clinical breast exams; and Mammographies.

Cervical Cancer Awareness

For: Women age 20 and older, and those under 20 who are sexually active

Program Goal: To increase women’s knowledge regarding cervical cancer screening, and improve their compliance with present screening guidelines.

Program Description: The program provides information on: mortality and morbidity of cervical cancer; benefits of early detection; identification and review of risk factors; and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology Screening Guidelines.

Skin Cancer Awareness Program

For: All adults

Program Goal: To increase public awareness of the dangers of over exposure to the sun and methods of prevention to reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Program Description: This program provides information on: incidence and causes of skin cancer; risk factors; types of skin cancer; skin cancer prevention for adults and children; and self examinations.

Healthy Living Series on Prostate and Colorectal Cancer

For: Adults age 50 and older

Program Goal: To provide education on prostate and colorectal cancer and increase utilization of prostate and colorectal cancer screening.

Program Description: This program provides information on: anatomy/physiology of the colon, rectum and prostate; signs and symptoms of colorectal and prostate cancer; risk factors; detection tools, including fecal occult blood tests, PSA blood tests and digital rectal examinations; and screening guidelines.

School-Based Education Programs

Glens Falls Hospital provides a number of cancer education and prevention programs for area school districts, as follows:


Breast Cancer Awareness & Self-Exam Program

For: High school teens

Program Goal: The goal of this program is to provide education about breast cancer and to teach young women the appropriate technique for breast self-examination in order to increase the rates of early detection and cure.

Program Description: This 45-minute program provides information on breast cancer statistics, risk factors, benefits of early detection, early detection methods, mammograms, and the proper breast self-examination technique.

Testicular Cancer Awareness & Self-Exam Program

For: High school teens

Program Goal: The goal of this program is to provide education about testicular cancer and to teach young men the appropriate technique for testicular self-examination in order to increase rates of early detection and cure.

Program Description: This 45-minute program provides information on testicular cancer mortality/morbidity, risk factors, warning signs, common diseases of the male pelvis, types of cancers of the testicles (seminoma/non-seminoma) and testicular self-examination.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Program

For: High school teens

Program Goal: The goal of this program is to provide education about cervical cancer causes, prevention and screening to increase rates of early detection and cure. Program Description: This 45-minute program provides information on cervical cancer incidence, benefits of early detection, risk factors and screening guidelines.

Skin Cancer Awareness/ Sun Safety Program

Goal of Program: The goal of this program is to decrease skin cancer in adulthood by providing intervention in early childhood. The program is adapted for varying age groups as follows:

Grades K-3

bulletThis 15-minute program provides information on protective sun measures and incorporates the use of a mannequin for instruction on appropriate attire.

 Grades 4-5

bulletThis 20-minute program uses role playing exercises to provide information on sun safety measures, and includes a brief discussion of ozone layer depletion.

 Junior & Senior High

bulletThis 45-minute program provides information on the incidence of skin cancer, risk factors, types of skin cancer, prevention and sun safety measures.
